> [!leaf] What Matters
Every time I have pulled the [[4 of Cups]], it has mirrored how I’m feeling at the time — that I don’t want to bother with anything or anyone; that I want to withdraw from the world. This desire isn’t, in itself, a problem. The recommendation that comes with the 4 is to go ahead and withdraw: accept stillness, move into contemplation and meditation, and remember what you currently do have, not what you are lacking.
The challenge with this card, at least for me, is finding the balance between action and inaction. This requires trusting that new insights will emerge from your unconscious given enough rest and contemplation, *without* getting lost in soul-sucking inertia. I fear, undoubtedly quite irrationally, apathy and withdrawal becoming a way of life, which is the shadow side of this card

> [!leaf] Connection to Other Cards
The only other card in the deck that has a divine or ‘other’’ hand offering a cup is the Ace. This suggests being offered a new beginning, something that could lead to more happiness.
> [!leaf] Actions
1. Start from where you are. Be willing to meditate, contemplate, rest, spend time in nature… whatever you need to do.
2. Take an inventory of the positives in your life and identify where you feel a sense of lack.
3. Be receptive to messages from dreams and intuitions.
4. “Create a collage that captures what stillness means to you. Include colours, textures, and other visual and sensory elements that illustrate the positives of being still. Refer back to it whenever you feel a sense of stagnancy.” This idea is from Chelsey Pippin Mizzi in her book *Tarot for Creativity*. My stillness collage is below.
5. Journal or freewrite responses to any of these questions or the quote:
- In what areas of my life am I disengaged? What do I no longer care about?
- What am I truly longing for? Name it. *Wild Unknown Tarot*
- How am I benefiting from a time of withdrawal and contemplation? *Tarot for Your Self*
