> Following a feeling towards a new life chapter; time to move on; releasing what no longer serves you
> [!leaf] What Matters
There’s a sense that something in your life has run its course and it is time for you to go within, figure out what’s right for you, and change direction. There is a transition from the familiar to the unfamiliar. This often isn’t a happy change, there may be a strong sense of painful loss because everything is fine and you don’t know why you are feeling so dissatisfied. But your unconscious is trying to get your attention, to let you know that things aren’t as they used to be or as they should be and that it is time to make a move. Life energy will return when you leave what is comfortable and known behind.
The shadow side of this card is either a refusal to change, or walking away and then regretting your choice.

> [!leaf] Symbolism
The cups are all upright, full of something that used to have value to you, but is no longer enough.
In some images, the cups are stacked to form a group of three and a group of five. *Spiritual Tarot* suggests this represents the inner trinity and the outer world of the five senses.
The figure walking away from the cups sometimes has a staff in hand, reminiscent of [[9 - Hermit]] suggesting inner awareness of the need to let go and move forward into the unknown.
The mountain looms large, again an image familiar to the Hermit, and usually indicative of higher truths.
There is a lunar eclipse happening, the only one in the tarot. Rachel Pollack explains —
“A moon phase, that is, a period of inner awareness, has taken over from outer-directed activity. By joining moon imagery to a scene of movement, the card teaches us that developing a deeper sense of self is also an action.”
> [!leaf] Connection to Other Cards
In addition to the [[9 - Hermit]] connections mentioned above, the 8 of Cups also has similarities to the [[3 of Wands]]. Both cards are about a journey to the unknown. The difference, according to Rachel Pollack, is that “the three of wands breaks down the ego and frees the exploring spirit, while the eight of cups moves from the vagueness of water to the specific knowledge of abstract principles symbolized by the climb up the Hermit’s mountain.”
> [!leaf] Actions
1. If you don’t know what change is necessary, the first step is to retreat from action, and do the journaling or meditating to become aware of what needs to be left behind. *Radiant Tarot* has a creative way of doing this. “Imagine that your house is on fire and it contains everything…. All the things yo ucarry in your heart, mind and spirit are in that house. You can rush in safely and carry out only the ones you love the most and that give you love in return.” What is it you would save? What would you let burn?
2. If you are feeling lethargic, allow it for a little while. Trust that new life will come from the swamp.
3. Start imagining a new beginning. For example, you might visualize overly heavy bags that you are going to drop and walk away from.
4. Journal or freewrite responses to any of these questions.
- What used to be meaningful to me but isn’t anymore? What is weighing me down?
- What tells me that it’s time to let go of something? What am I afraid will happen if I do?
- Is there an occasion from my past when I successfully released something that was draining me? What worked then that I might use again now?
