Up: [[Swords]] Created: 2026-07-04 > [!leaf] In Brief > Victim mentality; feeling powerless; negative and distorted thoughts > [!leaf] What Matters This card is about feeling trapped — unable to make a decision or go in a direction that would be beneficial to you. You may be too close to the problem and not able to see the unhelpful core belief that is keeping you stuck in place. You may be blinded by the opinions and expectations of others to the point where you don’t know what you want. Or maybe you are considering so many options, that you are unable to make a choice. Whatever your reason for the trap, and there are many, you lack faith in your ability to get out of it. ![[8 of Swords - RWS.webp|200]] And yet, as the *Rider-Waite-Smith* image so clearly shows, the bindings are loose and not hampering your legs. The water (emotions) you’re standing in is shallow, suggesting that your worries aren’t as significant as you think, although the mud is a representation of humiliation or shame so you’re likely caught in an obsessive thought loop. The swords are not surrounding you and there is no one else in the scene meaning that you are the one preventing yourself from freedom. Yes you are blindfolded and have your hands tied, so extricating yourself from the trap may feel difficult and may even be a little messy, but it’s absolutely doable if you make the choice. > [!Orbit] Jessica Dore in *Tarot for Change* > You get to decide what getting unstuck is worth to you. You get to choose what, when and how you’re willing to feel what needs to be felt in order for movement to happen. ![[8 of Swords - Mystical Moments.webp|200]] A favourite image from *Tarot of Mystical Moments* > [!leaf] Actions 1. Take the smallest possible baby step to break free from the inertia you are feeling. It doesn’t matter what it is, just do something. 2. Depending on the inner resources you have available to you, either immerse in the solitude and listen to your inner voice OR seek help from a friend or therapist. 3. Instead of dwelling on thoughts, which are keeping you locked in an obsessive loop, isolated from your emotions and intuition, use [[Expressive Art]] or actions from the [[Embodiment - Ground Curriculum]] to break free. 4. Journal or freewrite in response to any of these questions: - Where am I feeling trapped right now? What are the thoughts or beliefs I’m accepting as true that might not be? - What are the costs and what are the benefits to me of staying stuck? - Where in my life do I currently feel powerful? What beliefs or strategies can I transfer from that area to this one?
