![[Gate - Black and White.webp|200]]
Black and white gate is where we learn about all the different forms of love and what prevents us from expressing our love.
#### The Task
The task is to learn to be open-hearted — trusting, generous and curious — in our relationships with ourselves and others, as opposed to closed-hearted — holding on to resentments and disappointments.
#### The Challenge
The challenges of loving and expressing love are many. That won’t be news to anyone. Arrien says that many spiritual traditions view being in any kind of significant relationship with another person as *the most rigorous spiritual practice we can undertake* (p.76).
At this gate we contend with positive and negative [[Shadow]], with our inclination to protect our hearts through fear or pride, and with loving without controlling or being controlled.
#### A Practice or Three
The practice is to do Shadow work, which begins by recognizing that every positive and negative quality we see in others is a [[Projection]] of something that is in ourselves. The intention of shadow work is always to integrate the opposites, not to try to diminish some qualities and elevate others.
Do forgiveness work with yourself and others.
Practice gratitude towards others.
#### The Gift
The gift is being in better — more honest, more loving — relationship with ourselves and with others.
#### Prompts to Consider
- What calls for forgiveness, reparation, and reconciliation in your life?
- What broken relationships need mending?
- What forgiveness do you need to extend to yourself?
- Where do you struggle with fear and pride in your relationships, your work, your creativity? (p. 84)
