This gate stands alone, but it is also part of every other gate. Arrien refers to it as *the entryway to the thresholds of the second half of life.* (p.30) #### The Task In the second half of life, our task is to accept the aging of our body and mind while avoiding the stereotypes of aging as being only about loss, depression and decline. By reviewing our lives, both inner and outer, we can determine what has meaning for us, and where we want to devote our time and energy. Then our task is to become more adventurous, to get out of our comfort zones and open ourselves to new experiences. This requires the development of curiosity, flexibility, and trust. #### The Challenge If we accept the stereotypes of aging, or if we are in a liminal state such as when retiring from a career, the danger is the potential for soul loss with symptoms including: apathy, restlessness, self-doubt, irritability, anxiety, depression, futility, numbness, confusion, or a tendency to be overly critical. See also [[Physical Symptoms of Late-Life Liminality]]. All of these states need to be understood as our soul longing for us to move into something new. If we resist the new, we are refusing the mantle of the elder. #### A Practice Track your experiences by setting intentions, paying attention, and noticing what is. Tracking helps you objectively witness whether or not you are heading in the direction you want to go. #### The Gift The gift is feeling renewed, even reborn, seeing our life with fresh new eyes and witnessing the emergence of new aspects of ourselves. The promise is reclamation of wonder, awe and delight in a life that is meaningful and vital. #### Prompts to Consider - What generates meaning, hope, inspiration, and curiosity for you? - Where do you experience symptoms of soul loss: inertia, apathy, emptiness, confusion, futility, discontent, anxiety? - What private longings or callings have you repeatedly dismissed? What has prevented you from acting upon them? > [!user] [[Angeles Arrien]] in *The Second Half of Life: Opening the eight gates of wisdom* > The Silver Gate: Facing New Experiences and the Unknown
