In the tradition of [[Nick Milo]]’s penchant for naming things, ‘They Said, I Said’ is the name I’ve given to using a quote as a writing prompt.
Why do that? Here are six good reasons.
1. Similar to any prompt, having something to start with gets us past the paralyzing blank page.
2. Quotes offer bite-sized wisdom. I love comics, particularly single frame ones, for the same reason. Quotes and comics go right to the essence of a complex idea or a feeling, offering the perfect launching off point for your own thoughts and ideas.
3. There is often humour that startles me and makes me laugh out loud.
4. Quotes are often inspirational. A bit of an inner cheerleader kicks in.
5. Quotes can give me a different perspective. I may agree or disagree, it doesn’t matter. I’ve got my starting point.
6. I’ve discovered so many new authors and famous thinkers just because a few words they said made such a difference to me. How many of us would know anything of Plato or Socrates or Einstein if not for their quotes?
