Vital behaviours (Patterson) or critical moves (term used by the Heath brothers) have their roots in the Pareto Principle, which is the idea that 80% of results come from 20% of the actions.
A vital behaviour is in that 20%. It’s the very smallest set of high-leverage actions that are going to make the huge difference.
#### Examples
- Learning — Study something you don’t know well, then teach it others.
- Action orientation — Break task into small pieces
- Health — hand washing; wear a mask
### How to Find Vital Behaviours
- Research. Find out what the experts say. Look for the most cited research articles.
- Conduct tiny tests.
- Look for crucial moments — times when behaviour puts success at risk
**Remember. If it isn’t actionable, it isn’t a behaviour.**
Ask yourself: What behaviour would demonstrate that a particular value is being lived?
