I always thought of my educational career as my calling. I saw calling as synonymous with vocation, something much larger than a job or even a career. My vocation was what I felt I was put on earth to do, which is the definition of calling in my mind.
But that’s a problem now that I’m no longer in the work world. Does being retired mean being stripped of calling? Of purpose? Is that belief why so many people resist retirement? Feel useless in retirement? Scramble to fill their days?
How does the experience of retirement change if we think of calling as a way of [[Being Rather than Doing]]. Or, better yet, calling as a lifetime’s journey towards a more and more clear expression of my unique inner vision? Is calling synonymous with [[Individuation]]?
The desire for a sense of calling is a very human longing to be connected to a sense of purpose and meaning.
