A [[Dark Night of the Soul]] can’t be avoided, but we do have choice in how we deal with it. The first step is to go ahead and get into it.
> [!Orbit] Thomas Moore in *Dark Nights of the Soul: A guide to finding your way through life’s ordeals*
> Don’t try to have it finished. Don’t try to figure it out. Don’t try to outsmart it. You wouldn’t interfere with the natural birth process, so don’t fidget your way into the journey of soul that will make you more of a person and reveal your destiny. Be in one-act darkness. (p. 13)
More specifically:
- Surrender control. Give in to not knowing. Wait and listen for signals of inner wisdom as happened with [[Jung's Grand Experiment]].
- Organize your life to support the process. Tone it down if necessary so you aren’t lost in busyness and so you have time to think, concentrate and reflect.
- Use keys like [[Tarot]] as something to consider your experiences against and to keep you focused on your own values, rather than other people’s opinions.
- [[Savour]] beauty and simple pleasures.
- Tell your story through various creative actions. See [[Expressive Art]].
- Reframe. Moore says it’s possible to be bright, creative, thoughtful and imaginative during some dark nights. It doesn’t mean you’re repressing your feelings.
