Inner work is invisible. We distrust what we can’t see.
Our preference is for growth that is a straight line from A to B, usually through acquiring things, or skills, or money. We’re not comfortable with growth through development. It’s slower and a [[Spiral]] not a straight line.
We are less in touch with the natural world. We focus on activity, on fixing things, and have trouble allowing time for gestation or for fallow periods.
Education is about learning. But transition often requires unlearning of old habits and beliefs.
If transition does its work, we are changed. We don’t return to our old, comfortable ways. Many of us wish that weren’t so.
A current transition can reactivate a difficult experience of the past. Bridges gives the example of losing a parent when you are young, and consequently having extra difficulty with the ending of a relationship when you are an adult.
