I've not yet met my friend, J, in person. But we share an interest in mindful and contemplative photography, among other things, so we decided to work through the book *Zen Camera* by photographer, David Ulrich. We shared logs and a few photographs every week, making it halfway through the book before a major life event put an end to our explorations. It was a great experience. Hopefully we'll pick it up again later this year (2025).
## My Intention
I hope that *Zen Camera* can help me to discover my voice, my authentic vision in photography, to learn what it is that matters most to me. I’d like to be able to take photographs that express an emotion, that tell a story, that are interesting metaphors for life and my beliefs.
## Reminders from Author David Ulrich
1. Don’t worry about making ‘good’ photographs. Take photos of anything that provokes any kind of reaction or response.
2. Don’t edit and judge Just review each week’s worth of photos for connections, themes, ideas that are developing.
3. First thought, best thought. Go with first instinct of how to compose a photo.
4. Cup my hand around my eye to see different ways of framing.
5. Look at edges and boundaries, negative space, the relationships between things.
6. It’s light and framing that determines photo quality.
