First consider your typical immediate action if you feel an emotion, but don’t pause to identify it. My immediate response to fear is overwork, planning, and clearing the decks. I realized that I actually have a decent way of handling fear. If I pause and identify the emotion, I can set an intention and start small. But when I don’t do that, my habitual response to fear is to eat sugar! ![[A&E Fear actions (sketchbook).webp|400]] Next up were sadness and happiness. For sadness I try to overwhelm or hide my sadness with hopefulness. If I allowed a pause, I think I would bring more spaciousness, more lightness to the sadness while still letting the emotion be what it is. Happiness feels pretty consistent to me whether I pause or not. But I’d like to get good at pausing because I think it would allow me to better experience life’s beauties and simple pleasures.
