The idea that these labels can confidently be applied to things before they happen implies that you always know, in advance, the best way for any portion of your time to unfold — and that should reality beg to differ, it must always be reality that’s wrong. (p. 115) Burkeman goes on to say that there’s nothing wrong with having preferences for how you want your day to unfold. Just accept the reality that what you think of as interruptions or distractions could be recast as new opportunities or might, in hindsight, have been exactly what you needed at that moment. I have a lot more ease and pleasure in my day when my perspective matches Burkeman’s.
