Signs I’m accepting myself are when I’m not being overly self-critical, not wishing to be someone else, and not being conditional about acceptance, such as saying “I will accept myself when I lose 50 pounds.” I can still have goals, but my self-regard can’t be contingent on them.
Dr. Youdim makes a point that hadn’t occurred to me, namely that self-acceptance fluctuates. It’s perfectly normal to flip flop between self-acceptance and self-doubt. What is required is practice so that I can rebound from self-doubt more readily and quickly.
The way to practice includes cognitive reappraisal, which means acknowledging negative thoughts but not letting myself get tangled up in them. I think this is [[Witness]].
Self-acceptance is an important pre-requisite for change because if I don’t accept myself, I’m more likely to sabotage myself with negative thoughts.
