Statio is a pause, but a pause with a difference. In the monastic world it is an intentional pause between activities, a mini-transition where we are being deliberately mindful or, for the monks, prayerful. It’s often referred to as a holy pause.
I first learned of statio from Christine Valters Paintner, an abbess. She suggests treating our breath as a threshold, a place of possibility. Instead of hurrying from one activity to the next, stop and take five full deep breaths.
I love the way she describes the benefit:
> [!Orbit] Christine Valters Paintner in *Wisdom of the Body*
> We call upon the breath as an ancient soul friend to help us witness our lives unfolding rather than being carried along until we aren’t sure where our lives are going. We can return again and again to our bodies and their endless wisdom and listen at every threshold. (p. 37)
I’ve been trying to practice Statio. It’s difficult to remember to do it, but when I do, it really does stop the whirling dervish energy of running from one thing to the next. I think that if I can make this a more consistent practice, it will really help me to be more attentive to the present moment which is a huge part of [[Savour]].
