Jungian analyst [[Marion Woodman]] made enormous contributions to depth psychology in her writings about what happens for obese and also anorexic women. She explained that when a mother isn’t in touch with her own body, that insecurity extends to her daughter.
The results, for an obese woman, are so damaging and far-reaching. They include:
- a fat body that provides the concrete grounding the woman needs
- a tendency to go into her head, having lots of insights that go nowhere because they are disembodied
- problems with [[Self-Acceptance]] if the woman hates what she sees in the mirror
- dismissive of her body because of a belief that the soul is too pure to have a form
- a focus on [[Masculine Principle]] values like discipline and duty. As a result *the energy that wants to flow into creating, living, playing, is forced to find its outlet in blind compulsions.* (*Addiction to Perfection*, p.85)
The solution is to let the body play, and make spontaneous movements. This constellates the unconscious in the same way that a dream does.
