I love Yin Yoga precisely because it is Yin. There is no striving to find and hold an active, muscular pose. There are no quick transitions between poses. In Yin Yoga, the work is on the connective tissue beneath the muscles. You come to it cold, no warmup needed, and the idea is take the pose to the edge of sensation, where it’s a touch uncomfortable, and then you soften into it for 3-5 minutes.
Yin poses are mostly of the seated and lying down variety. They concentrate on spine and hips. Intense feelings can arise during yin poses because of this work in the area of the [[Sacral Chakra]]. The idea in holding a pose is to stay connected to your breath, and to not only soften/yield into the pose, but also to soften mind and heart. It’s about being gently aware and allowing.

Wow! Amazing embodying at tonight’s yin yoga class. We did half an hour with our legs up the wall. Part way through that when we were in reverse swan with the sole of one foot on the wall and the other foot crossed over the knee, I was yawning so much that my eyes were watering and I feared lockjaw! I asked Tracy about it afterwards. She said it’s just my body really relaxing and that they’ve found with the veterans that these inverted poses are the most relaxing so they do them a lot. I feel absolutely wonderful and ready for a great night’s sleep
