Osbert was a French painter, significant in the [[Symbolism]] movement of the late 19th century.
He made realistic paintings of historical and religious themes, and symbolic paintings of rebirth and mystical themes.
Osbert’s symbolist paintings were done in a monochromatic palette, often blues and greens. The light is diffuse, contributing to the mystical aspects. The paintings were often of solitary women in nature, such as in the examples below.
