Add the colour to white, not white to the colour, to make a tint. When all three primary colours are mixed together, you get mud. When a primary colour is mixed with its complementary colour, mud will still be the result because you’re still mixing all three colours. For example, the complementary of red + green is the same as red + blue + yellow because green is a mixture of blue and yellow. To desaturate a colour, mix it with the one opposite it on the colour wheel. Bonus: It gives more interesting colours than using the unmixed one. To get a shading colour for glass — viridian green or any darker shade of green + cobalt blue Yellow ochre is always needed when painting food, drink, or landscape. Pair jewel tones with soft colours to make the jewel tones pop.
