It may seem unsurprising if you dream about something that happened during the day. You may think it’s just because person or that situation is on your mind. But your unconscious is exposed to so many people, objects and situations throughout any day. Why did you dream of that particular thing? Often because your ego is getting caught in a [[complex]] or anticipating getting caught in a complex.
Dreams run parallel to external events, but they’re not movies from your day. They are, says Jung, *invariably seeking to express something that the ego does not know and does not understand*. (CW 17, para. 189) They come to provide [[Compensation]] of our conscious attitude from that day or the day after. So to make any sense of the dream you have to know what was going on at the time in both your attitude and external events.
When you write a dream, jot down a few notes of context.
