Up: [[Dreams]] Created: 2023-02-12 Updated: 2025-10-23 Whether we remember them or not, we all dream approximately every 90 minutes during sleep. It's possible that we do so every 90 minutes during the day as well, but that's covered over by consciousness so it's hard to know. Extrapolating from these numbers, if we live to age 80, we will have spent **six years** of our life dreaming. Not six years asleep. Six years dreaming. Interestingly, a dream takes about the same amount of time as it would if we were watching the action on television. Dreams are most often during the light sleep that follows deeper sleep. The rapid eye movements (REM) that accompanies dreams might be us following movements in the dream. We don't know.
