![[Ibis My Art.webp|400]]
This is a symbol relevant to the [[17 - Star]] card.
The ibis is a sacred Egyptian symbol of the god of wisdom, Thoth. Thoth was said to have the head of an Ibis. It was thought he created the world by hatching the World Egg while speaking the sacred words of Creation. The Egyptians believed that Thoth hovered over them and taught them the occult arts.
Thoth is also credited with having invented writing and is considered a moon god. Since the [[Moon]] is typically associated with goddesses, Walker says that he became the guardian of the Moon Gates in heaven because he was the spouse of Maat, also known as Seshat, who was Mistress of the House of Books, meaning truth, law, and words of power.
The curved shape of the bird’s beak refers to the crescent moon.
The stride of the ibis measures exactly a cubit which was the measure used in the building of temples. How cool is that!
The length and pointedness of the beak are connected to “plumbing the depths of wisdom”, which is the same for the heron.
Cooper says the ibis signifies the soul, aspiration, and perseverance.
The Greeks made the ibis sacred to Hermes, protector of heroes.
