Up: [[Visual Arts]] Created: 2024-12-08 Updated: 2025-06-16 I never know my destination when I start to make a collage. My process is as non-linear and illogical as a dream. I combine fragments, piecing them together in ways that suggest, but do not dictate, a story. I suspend judgment and work playfully, allowing the process to lead. What feels right? This is one place where I make no attempt to control the outcome, and that is so relaxing, so meditative. Every collage is a little mystery, open to multiple interpretations not just by other people, but by me. I see different stories each time I look at a collage I’ve made. Are the two grey figures guardians or threats? Is the young woman naive or sexually provocative? My interpretation depends on what’s happening in my day. ![[CC 2025-02-23.webp]] When I’m making a collage, I allow the images to find me. I discover new connections as I attempt to integrate pieces that arrive in my hand. There’s no need for one thing to exclude another. Each piece can contribute to the whole, and opposites are welcomed. > [!Orbit] Ellen Gallagher > Collage is an art of intuition, where images and materials speak a language beyond words. > [!orbit] Norman.
