A guideline, not a rule, that applies to composing any visual image including films.
Divide any image space into a equally spaced nine-part grid. This creates four points where the lines intersect. These are the sweet spots or hot spots.
Put objects at these intersections.
Doing this gives the composition more energy and interest than if the object/subject were simply centred in the image like a bullseye.
If you’ve got an object at one intersection, you can often get balance by putting a second object at the opposing intersection.
Using the rule of thirds also helps prevent the problem of a composition being split in half, vertically or horizontally.
