The [[Ego]]’s greatest power comes from its ability to mediate between the inner and outer worlds. This is where it takes us [[From Image to Symbol]].
The way to do this in an Active Imagination is to bring full Ego strength when you engage the image. See ‘Engage’ in [[Steps of Active Imagination]]. You need to be as or more focused and deliberate in what you say and do than you would be in an outer world interaction.
Then you need to be equally deliberate in making your mind a blank so that you can hear or see what the unconscious wants to say or do. This is the place for letting whatever happens, happen. It’s a very uncomfortable, unnatural position for the Ego which is why [[Active Imagination is a Skill]] that needs practicing.
Finally, it’s the Ego that achieves Jung’s ethical imperative of bringing what it learned in the unconscious into our waking life.
