### Defining Value
Describes how light or dark a colour is. So you can have lots of values of the same [[hue]].
A light blue, a very light blue, a dark blue.
A light greenish-blue, a mid-value greenish-blue, a dark greenish-blue.
Every colour also has a value. Yellows have a high (lighter) value, blues and dark reds a low (darker) value.
### Value is Important
Without variations in value, a painting will look flat. Value is needed to convey mood and depth.
Use value contrast to direct viewer attention. High contrast areas draw the eye, low contrast areas provide a visual break.
### Tips
- Before painting, create a grayscale sketch focusing solely on value.
- To identify values in a scene take a photo and convert it to black and white.
